Learning how to identify antique jewelry is less about memorising every maker and more about reading the object as a system: metal marks, how it was built, how stones are set, and which style vocabulary it speaks. A Victorian mourning brooch, an Art Nouveau enamel pendant, and a mid-century costume clip can look similar in a phone thumbnail — the clasp, the wear pattern, and the mark under the bezel usually tell them apart. Use this guide as a checklist before you price anything, and treat every conclusion as identification, not a formal appraisal.

Marks and hallmarks on jewelry

Start under loupe light on the clasp, pin stem, ring shank interior, or pendant bail. British and continental pieces may show town and date letters that match silver-hallmark systems — a lion passant on a brooch still means sterling, not a brand name.

Absence of a mark does not prove costume metal. Early handmade pieces, repaired heirlooms, and some American work before consistent stamping laws can be unmarked. Conversely, a crisp modern ‘14K’ stamp on a piece with machine-perfect prongs and synthetic stones is a mismatch worth questioning.

Materials — gold karat, silver, and costume

Gold karat tells alloy purity: 24K is nearly pure; 18K (750) and 14K (585) dominate fine antique jewelry; 9K and 10K appear in British and American work. Colour alone is unreliable — rose, yellow, and green gold were all used historically, and plating can fake warmth on base metal.

Silver jewelry may be sterling (925), coin silver, or German silver / nickel silver — the last is not precious. Magnet tests are blunt tools: most gold and silver are non-magnetic, but findings (clasps, springs) can attract a magnet without condemning the whole piece.

Construction — hand work vs machine

Hand-fabricated antique jewelry shows slight asymmetry: sawn galleries, filed edges, solder seams that are not perfectly uniform, and backs finished with care but not factory polish. Machine-era and modern mass production favour identical castings, crisp mould lines, and findings that look stamped from the same die.

Look at how parts join. Hand-riveted pin stems, handmade jump rings, and tube hinges on Victorian lockets differ from pressed pin assemblies and modern spring clasps. Repair history matters — a new clasp on an old body is common and does not erase age, but it does change value.

Under magnification, casting bubbles, soft detail on ‘engraving’ that is actually moulded, and identical left/right halves of a brooch suggest later manufacture. True hand engraving cuts into metal with varying depth; stamped ‘engraving’ repeats the same shallow pattern.

Stones and settings

Settings date a piece almost as reliably as style. Closed-back foil settings, cut-down collets, and rose-cut diamonds in silver-topped gold lean early. Open-backed prong settings for brilliant-cut stones become common later. Paste (glass) was used openly in Georgian and Victorian fashion jewelry — foil behind glass can look vivid under candlelight and dull under LEDs.

Check for tool marks around the stone: hand-cut seats leave tiny irregularities; machine seats are even. Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco style cues

Victorian jewelry (roughly 1837–1901) spans sentimental lockets, mourning jet and hairwork, heavy gold with Etruscan granulation revival, and later machine-assisted pieces. Motifs include snakes, hearts, anchors, and botanical realism. Pin stems are often long; safety catches appear more on later Victorian and Edwardian work.

Art Nouveau (c. 1890–1910) favours flowing lines, enamel plique-à-jour, female profiles, dragonflies, and asymmetrical nature forms. Pieces feel sculptural rather than rigidly geometric. Look for enamel wear at high points and handmade wirework.

Art Deco (c. 1920s–1930s) is the opposite vocabulary: symmetry, stepped geometry, calibrated stones, platinum and white metal preference, and bold contrast. Filigree can appear in both Edwardian and Deco contexts — pair geometry with metal colour and stone layout before you lock a decade.

Native American jewelry — brief tells

Southwestern Native American silver jewelry often shows hand-stamped designs, turquoise (natural matrix patterns matter), and construction that values individual smith work. Maker’s marks and hallmarks on the reverse became more common in the 20th century; earlier pieces may be unmarked.

Machine-cast ‘Native style’ tourist jewelry repeats identical stamp patterns and uses dyed or reconstituted stone. Weight, stamp sharpness, and how bezels seat the stone help separate workshop pieces from mass imports. Brooches are among the easiest antique jewelry categories to date by hardware. Early C-clasps, tube hinges, and long pin stems without safety catches lean Victorian or earlier. Locking safety clasps and shorter pins trend later. Converted earrings and reused findings are common — note mismatches between front style and back hardware.

Photograph the reverse fully: hinge, pin tip length past the clasp, and any repair solder. The front tells the style story; the back often tells the manufacturing story.

What to photograph for identification

Shoot the full piece on a neutral background in diffuse daylight. Then add macros: every mark, the clasp or shank interior, stone settings from the side, and areas of wear on high points. For brooches, always include the reverse.
